From Worldwide Trams Wiki, for Tram, Light Rail, Metro and Rapid Transit fans everywhere
[edit] Welcome...
Hi Bluegoblin7 -- we are excited to have Worldwide Trams Wiki as part of the Wikia community!
Starting a new wiki can be overwhelming, but don't worry, the Wikia Community Team is here to help! We have put together a few guides to getting started. They say imitation is the best form of flattery so absolutely check out other wikis on Wikia for ideas on layout, ways to organize your content, etc. We are all one big family at Wikia and the most important thing is to have fun!
- Our guide to Getting Started gives you 5 things you can do right now to set your wiki up for success
- We also put together some Advice On Starting a Wiki which provides a more a in-depth look at some of the important things you should consider when building a wiki
- If you are new to wikis in general than we recommend checking our new user FAQ
If you need help (which trust me we ALL do) you can access our full in-depth help at Help Wikia, or email us through our contact form. Also, you can visit our live #wikia chat channel any time. A lot of the veteran "Wikians" hang out here so its a good place if come if you want to get some advice or simply make friends.
Now, go edit! We look forward to seeing this project thrive!
Best wishes, Catherine Munro
[edit] Hi
Hi BG7
I already have an account here which I created a while back. Tbo 157 11:30, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- Ok Tbo, thanks.
- I've sysopped you up here, so please feel free to get stuck in. I also want to use a different main page to SW etc, so if you could work on that as your first "challenge"!
- Please delete anything that's not in use. Save cluttering up the wiki!
- Thanks,
- Bluegoblin7 19:42, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Trams Wikia NL
A Hi BG7,
The Dutch Trams Wikia is now part of the family! From now on I will try to give it the same touch as this wiki. If you have any comments, please do so. --Eelco 02:11, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Eelco,
- Thanks a lot.
- I also left a message on your talk page at NL about standardisation.
- Thanks,
- Bluegoblin7 11:18, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Monaco
Hi Blue Goblin -
Great work on Trams!
Sorry about changing the default skin. Should be good now. Have you seen the page on Monaco Skin Customization?Monaco has a lot of really cool features that let you expose new and experienced users to your wiki's content. If you need help customizing, let me know. Also, once you've built a bit more content, please consider asking for a spotlight.
Thanks,
-- BillK
(talk) 19:31, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
PS - I've added some pictures from my travels. I hope you can use them. :)
- Thanks Bill - no worries about the skin! I will probably use Monaco when I have time to customise it!
- Great pics - will find use eventually!
- BG7 15:30, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Hey
Hey Bluegoblin7,
thanks for the invitation, but I wasn't planning on doing much work on the Trams wiki's. I just help my husband, Eelco, around with some random stuff on the Dutch wiki.
It was nice meeting you, and good luck with the English wiki.
Greetings,
- --ThePegasus 10:51, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cascade style sheets & content
Hi BG7,
I just had a look at the Blackpool Transport article and I was wondering where all those weird text like "<tr> <td colspan="2" class="" is coming from? I have the feeling that your cascaded style sheets don't contain all the classes you're using. Is that because the text is a copy from the wikipedia article. If that is the case, please beware of the fact that the .css files on wikipedia contain far more classes than the .css files I uploaded on both the EN and NL tram wiki's. Bear that in mind if you copy content from wikipedia. --Eelco 05:17, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Eelco,
- I was aware of these! Wikipedia are overly-complicated in the matter!
- I have a user (dubbed WP's template king!) coming over to have a look. It seems to be mainly Infobox, Infobox Public transit, Infobox Bus transit and Navbox. I had a "good" copy of Infobox rail for the articles that call that.
- Thanks for warning me though!

[edit] Spotlight
Hi Bluegoblin7. Worldwide Trams Wiki is really nice and very close to meeting the requirements for a spotlight. You have a good welcome template, and you're using it, you have a nice front page and a logo, and over 100 pages of content. So that's all really great, and I think it will be a good spotlight!
The one area I think needs a bit of cleanup is the categories. You have a fair number of uncategorized pages (especially the dates), and a lot of uncategorized categories. Could you work on this?
The other thing I noticed, and this isn't a requirement, is that you don't have a customized favicon. That's the little image (the default is a yellow "w") in the address bar of your browser. Would you like to create one?
Let me know if I can help you with the categories or the favicon, or if you have other questions! Once you get the categories cleaned up we'll be happy to put Worldwide Trams in the queue for a spotlight. -- Wendy (talk) 17:54, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- Good deal about the categories. I can't make .ico files myself either, but I use this web tool to convert png/jpg images into them. When you upload the result to the wiki it will look blank on the screen and may take a little while to appear up in the addressbar so be patient :). Let me know if it doesn't work at all for some reason! -- Wendy (talk) 18:07, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. I saw that your uncategorized pages were gone this morning and added you to the spotlight queue. I can't promise you when the spotlight will appear; you can see here the list which is in request order. I think you'll have plenty of time to update your logo though :), and I'll try to give you a heads up when we do get the spotlight ready to go.
- Also, I like your favicon. I can't see it yet either, but I checked out the png :). -- Wendy (talk) 15:01, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I know what you mean by "custom namespaces" and deleting the forum. Do you mean in the menubars? That's editable at MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar... but I'm not sure what you're really asking.
- Oh I see what you are asking now. You already have some namespaces. You can see them when you do a search; there's a whole set of boxes for the namespaces you can search. So you have "Worldwide Trams Wiki" and "Help" by default. Technically "Category" is a namespace, as is "Template" and "Talk".... basically anything with a colon after it.
- Also, you can create little namespaces. So you could make a page User:Bluegoblin7/projects. It would no longer be part of the main wiki, but instead part of your namespace. Or you could make an image gallery as a subpage of a give tramline if you wanted to.
- What did you want to do with the namespaces?
[edit] Question & Spotlight
Hey Bluegoblin7,
I was wondering how you removed the text below the title of an article. Under the Title:Wereldwijde Tram Wiki, you can read the line From Tram Wiki. How can I change this?
Oh, and I wanted to let you know that I stole your idea to get my own wiki in the spotlight. Hope you're not offended by it. Maybe we can share a spotlight :).
Greetings,
- --ThePegasus 12:26, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- I think the text should be something like this: Van de Nederlandstalige Trams Wiki.
- Any help would be appreciated.
- Thanks for taking a look.
- --ThePegasus 12:37, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- ....and you have a very nice Welcome template! ;)
- --ThePegasus 12:37, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
Yay! It worked! It now says:
- Overleg gebruiker:ThePegasus
- ------
- Van de Nederlandstalige Trams Wiki.
Very nice! Thanks a lot! The language is already in Dutch. If you log in on the English wiki, you get English texts everywhere. If I log in as ThePegasus on the Dutch wiki, I do get the Dutch texts.
I'll keep you in mind, if I ever need help with MediaWiki software. Thanks for your help! --ThePegasus 12:51, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Hello
Thanks for the welcome. I have many more images from my collection, that I'll upload over the next few days. Is there a way to use categories for the images, like Wikimedia Commons?Mjobling
[edit] Metro?
Hey,
I was wondering why you changed your welcome message, and announced that this wiki also includes info about Metro's. There is already a separate wiki about metro's, and it was my understanding that your wiki is only about trams. If you want to combine different means of public transportation, maybe you should start a wiki about that. There is already a Russian wiki about public transportation.
Greetings, --ThePegasus 15:20, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi BG7,
- I just read your answer on the NL trams wiki and I'm sorry to say that I don't agree with you. This wiki should be the Tram wiki and nothing else. If I want to add metro's to the wiki I could better start a Public Transport wiki instead of this one. I consider metro's one of the biggest enemies of trams, because in many cities they are the reason for the dissappearence of tram systems. In many cities, like in Amsterdam, München and Frankfurt, the local government authorities consider (or in the past considered) the closure of the tram system in favor of an expanding metro network. You can off course include metro systems on this wiki, but in my opinion they are off limits. By the way, in what language is the metro wiki written? The articles I read are in English
- --Eelco 16:41, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi,
- I've read your responses to my question about the metro on Eelco's page and mine, and I just don't understand your reasoning that they are very much alike. And yes the metro wiki is very much in English...
- I find it weird that you use metro articles on a tram wiki, because they simply aren't the same. Now let me ask you another question: What if London Underground didn't exist...would you still want to implement metro articles? If I look around your wiki I only see articles that are related to Great Britain. Blackpool, London, Manchester.... It is the "Worldwide Trams Wiki" right?
- Anyway, I'm not aiming to shoot you down. I'm merely asking a question. You wrote that I shouldn't implement problems here, but where else would you like me to go? :)
- I hope that you will take in consideration what we have pointed out to you.
- Good luck with your wiki and congrats on the spotlight :). The spotlight looks nice. I hope it will bring you a few extra active users.
- --ThePegasus 20:04, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Heads up
Hi -- I just wanted to let you know that your spotlight is ready and you should start seeing it shortly. Good luck! -- Wendy (talk) 18:40, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Bluegoblin. The spots usually last for a couple of weeks or so. -- Wendy (talk) 01:37, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- We're not doing new spots in Monobook and Quartz any more; as far as I know unless the wiki was created with monobook it's no longer possible to even set that as the default. I encourage you to consider shifting the default for this wiki to monaco; it's a good skin with lots of nice features. I'd be happy to help you customize it. -- Wendy (talk) 17:04, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi BG7,
- At the time I customized the NL Monaco skin, I also uploaded it to the EN wiki, maybe you can remember that another user (BillK) set the Monaco skin as default. You reverted it than back to monobook. If you want to see how the EN wiki looks like in monaco please have a look at the NL wiki.
- Greetings,
- --Eelco 18:42, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Interlanguage links
Hi Bluegoblin7. I created interlanguage links between de, en and nl. If you want to link an article to its english pendant, just add en:$ARTICLENAME to it. Same for linking from e.g. the english article 'Tram' to the nederlands article 'Tram' - just add nl:Tram to the english one. Linking to de is done via de:ARTICLENAME. --Avatar

[edit] Monaco
Hi -- I stopped by to see how you were getting on with the skin, and it looks great -- well done! -- Wendy (talk) 00:28, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. I'm not sure which links look cluttered to you -- did you mean the toolbox? My recommendation there would be to take out the German/Dutch links, as those are now functioning down in the language box. Of the others, the one I see least often is "Random Image" but I assume that's something you wanted.
- You can replace the two categories in the sidebar with anything you want. Just delete the category1 stuff that's there and add normal links like you did in the first tab. It can be a straight link to a page, or a link to a category. For categories, put
- * :Category:WhatYouWantToSee|What You Want to See
- Use a ** for the flyout part of the menu.
- If you tell me which ones you want up there I can do one for an example. However there may be a delay between editing the menus and seeing the changes, as I'm sure you already discovered!
- The most obvious "other" thing you can do with the skin is to change the top bar (under the logo and ads) to an image. I only know how to do it with a repeating image (eg. Seuss Wiki, but I've seen it done with one big one. One of the most customized skins I've ever seen is on Bucketheadland.
- I'm afraid I don't know much about widgets. I will try to find somebody who has used them to answer your question. -- Wendy (talk) 00:22, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- I got rid of the red searchbar for you. It looks like the top bar (the wikia bar) is intended to be red, but the code isn't done correctly. Did you want that red?
- In order to put images into the header and under the menus you have to upload them and then code them into the .css pages. If you look at Buckethead's customization, you can see all the little bits and images that can be added, including how to make the menus transparent (in the "navigation div" section) and the images (in the "background_strip" for the top and "navigation" for the menu). If you are going to put an image under transparent menus, you'll want it to be faint so you can still read the text. Also you have to use the full URL of the image, which you can find after you upload, by right clicking on the image and choosing "copy image location".
- The language bar works on any page which has a corresponding page of the same name on the other wiki. So here it works on Main Page, and I'm not sure what else. But if, for example, you and the German guys both had a page called "Trams" it would work there. -- Wendy (talk) 14:41, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. I think I have this wiki looking like the dutch one again, aside from the red search you didn't want... did I miss anything? Once you get any other images uploaded (eg. for a menubar or an accent image) let me know and we'll work on putting them back without messing everything else up. You'll see that I took out a lot of code that you didn't really need for what you're doing at the moment.
[edit] UK Transport Wiki.
2 things on uk transport wiki.

[edit] Latest changes
Ok. I've gone ahead and added the background and header strips. On my (fairly small) screen the header script text overlaps the username; probably not an issue for wider screens. And I think the background & the accent & the logo is a bit busy over in that corner....
You did a very nice job realigning the menu-image under the accent though; that part looks very cool.
Anyhow, I also created Template:Countdown. To use it, edit the template for the target date and the event and then put countdown on the page where you want it. If you need more than one counter for some reason, you'll have to create a second template, or wait until the first one expires. -- Wendy (talk) 00:33, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Boring vandal
Hi Bluegoblin7. Thanks for reporting the problem. I've blocked the user and reverted the vandalism. If you notice him again, you will find a "block" link on Special:Recentchanges which you can use to prevent him editing. If you visit his user contributions list, you'll also see a series of [rollback] links which changes each page back to the revision before his edit. Angela

Apologies for not making it at the weekend. Unfortunately I had to cancel at the last minute, due to a problem with my car.
I'll have to try and make it up for one of the other themed weekends in the summer instead.

[edit] Welcome on UK Railways
Hi BG7 Sort of got your welcome message at Railways Wiki, the template code was faulty so did not display , so edited to match one on another wikia. left copy of changed bit in so you can see. Wiki codes not my thing yet, my trials at coding have been only partially successful. Trams and Railways not my main thing just a casual visit when bored on wikipedia and other forums out of action. did a bit of cleaning up whilst trying to figure out site structure and trawling through content. And looking for examples of side bar to find out how to modify it.
Am adding links to UK Trams, Transport and Roads,Wikis when I can sort it out from Tractor & Construction Plant Wiki, which covers Tractors, Excavators Etc, Steam Rollers and Traction engines, Heavy Haulage, + Scale Models Collecting and History (left message here as looks like your primary wiki home) BulldozerD11 (talk) 01:18, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
